Alabama CDL test at a glance
Commercial driver licensing follows federal FMCSA rules, so the Alabama CDL knowledge tests cover the same CDL manual topics used nationwide. Federal rules require a score of at least 80% on each knowledge test. After passing, you get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) and must hold it at least 14 days before the skills test. First-time Class A and B applicants must also complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) from a registered provider.
Tip: Start with General Knowledge: every CDL applicant takes it. Then add Air Brakes and Combination Vehicles if you want a Class A.
